is no pot like t<strong>his</strong>.<br />

Had space permitted, it was the intention to<br />

add extra <strong>and</strong><br />

nondescript designs to prove that it was by intention <strong>and</strong> selection<br />

that the marks specially classed as " <strong>Bacon</strong>ian" were introduced<br />

iuto a certain very comprehensive circle <strong>of</strong> books <strong>of</strong> the<br />

sixteenth <strong>and</strong> seventeenth centuries. The curious <strong>and</strong> industrious<br />

reader should satisfy himself on t<strong>his</strong> point by studying the<br />

" extras" in these or other books <strong>of</strong> the period. He will find<br />

.shields, chains, fleur-de-lis, roses, bell-flowers, cardinals' hats,<br />

shrines, lambs <strong>and</strong> flags, lions, Mercury's rods, spread eagles,<br />

double-headed eagles, etc., with a quantity <strong>of</strong> distinct but nondescript<br />

figures, <strong>and</strong> many <strong>of</strong> the old foreign marks, varied or<br />

modified.<br />

It must be borne in mind that the present collection consists<br />

only <strong>of</strong> selections made from the limited number <strong>of</strong> books from<br />

which we have been able to draw. Unfortunately, many other<br />

books related to the subject had been examined with a view to<br />

other particulars before we had grasped the importance <strong>of</strong> the<br />

paper-marks as first links in the chain.<br />

All the editions <strong>of</strong> books <strong>of</strong> the sixteenth <strong>and</strong> seventeenth centuries<br />

should be searched; the most elementary educational<br />

books, as well as the sermons " preached ;" masques <strong>and</strong> plays<br />

"produced;" songs <strong>and</strong> hymns " written, " "penned," "presented,"<br />

"set to music;" theological, scientific <strong>and</strong> <strong>his</strong>torical<br />

works "collected," "augmented," "revised;" classical <strong>and</strong>
