2007 Review
The Texans (1-0) won their season opener for the third time in team history and the first time since 2003 when they
beat the Kansas City Chiefs 20-3 in Reliant Stadium. Both teams were held scoreless in the first quarter. In the second
quarter, a forced fumble by LB DeMeco Ryans gave Houston the ball at the Kansas City 29-yard line. QB Matt Schaub
led a 21-yard drive to set up K Kris Brown’s 26-yard field goal, giving Houston a 3-0 lead. The Texans defense held, and
Schaub returned to the field to hit WR Andre Johnson for a 77-yard touchdown pass. The completion, which was the
longest in both Johnson and Schaub’s careers, put the Texans ahead 10-0. The Texans defense again held, but Schaub
was taken down by Kansas City T Alfonso Boone. A 59-yard punt by P Matt Turk and an offensive holding call pushed
the Chiefs back to their 15-yard line, preventing Kansas City from getting an advantageous field position. Seconds
before halftime, Texans CB Dunta Robison intercepted a pass from Kansas City QB Damon Huard intended for WR Jeff
Webb. In the Chiefs’ first drive of the third quarter, FB Kris Wilson fumbled a pass from Huard, and DE Mario Williams
recovered the football, running it in for a 38-yard touchdown. Williams returned to the field to sack Huard, helping to
force a Kansas City three-and-out. The Chiefs defense recovered a Houston fumble on a Schaub pass intended for
Johnson. Huard drove his team downfield until he was taken down by Williams who registered his second sack of
the day. Kansas City was forced to settle for a 27-yard field goal from K Justin Medlock, making the score 17-3. With
time winding down in the fourth quarter, the Texans used their running game to put together a 10-minute drive. RB
Ahman Green and RB Ron Dayne had most of the carries for the Texans, setting up 28-yard field goal from Brown. The
Texans defense finished off the Chiefs with a sack by DE N.D. Kalu and an interception by DT Travis Johnson, handing
Houston a 20-3 victory.
