In their first nationally televised, prime-time game of the year, the Houston Texans (7-7) defeated the Denver Broncos
31-13 at Reliant Stadium. QB Sage Rosenfels started a second consecutive game for an injured QB Matt Schaub.
Rosenfels put the Texans ahead early when he capped a 69-yard drive with a five-yard touchdown run on the opening
drive. The Broncos got to the Houston 13 early in the second quarter, but a penalty and a pass for a loss of five yards
forced third-and-20. S Will Demps knocked QB Jay Cutler’s pass down in the end zone and Denver settled for a 41-
yard field goal by K Jason Elam that made it 7-3. WR André Davis opened the Texans’ ensuing drive with a 50-yard
kickoff return and a 20-yard reception. Houston capped the drive with a 41-yard field goal by K Kris Brown to give the
Texans a 10-3 lead midway through the second quarter. Denver responded with Elam booting in a 47-yard field goal to
make the score 10-6 at halftime. In the third quarter, DE Mario Williams sacked Cutler to force a fourth down and the
Broncos went for it, but the pass fell short, giving Houston the ball. RB Ron Dayne, who didn’t start because of a sore
ankle, scored on a six-yard run on the ensuing drive to push Houston’s lead to 17-6. TE Tony Scheffler caught a short
pass from Cutler and leaped for a touchdown in the final minute of the third quarter for Denver to make it 17-13. The
fourth quarter began with WR Andre Johnson grabbing a four-yard touchdown reception for his career-high seventh
touchdown of the season, making the score 24-13. Williams then notched his third sack of Cutler, forcing the Broncos to
punt. Williams’ three sacks made him Houston’s career sack leader with 17.5. He has had a sack in a team-record five
straight games and has 13 for the season and nine in the last five games. The Texans stretched the lead to 31-13 when
FB Vonta Leach scored on a 1-yard run with 3:20 remaining. The Texans maintained that lead for the rest of the game to
earn the team’s seventh win of the season, which tied the franchise record for victories.
