The Texans (3-4), who scored a franchise-record 29 points in the fourth quarter, fell to the Tennessee Titans by a score
of 38-36. Tennessee opened the game with a drive by QB Kerry Collins that resulted in a 52-yard field goal by K Rob
Bironas. The Texans took the lead when LB DeMeco Ryans sacked Collins and returned the quarterback’s fumble for
a 26-yard touchdown. The Titans responded with another Collins drive that ended with a 25-yard field goal by Bironas,
making the score 7-6 at the end of the first quarter. Tennessee took over in the second quarter with Bironas kicking
a 21-yard field goal, RB LenDale White running in a one-yard touchdown and Bironas then booting in 30- and 28-yard
field goals. The Texans entered the third quarter down 22-7 and without a starting QB Matt Schaub, who suffered ankle
and hip injuries in the first half. The Titans took advantage of the deflated home team and Bironas continued to kick
field goals, knocking in a 43-yarder at the start of the quarter. RB Chris Henry got going, running for 40 yards, including
a four-yard touchdown, in a drive that gave his team a 32-7 lead. Houston, behind the arm of QB Sage Rosenfels, rose
from the ashes in the final period. The Texans’ furious rally began with a 70-yard drive that resulted in a seven-yard
touchdown catch by WR David Anderson. The Texans cut the lead to 32-22 on a six-yard touchdown reception by
WR Kevin Walter. The Texans forced a punt, but Anderson fumbled it and Tennessee recovered. That set up Bironas’
seventh field goal, a 29-yarder that made the score 35-22. TE Jeb Putzier’s seven-yard touchdown catch with less than
two minutes remaining trimmed the lead to 35-29. The Texans then recovered an onside kick and Rosenfels hit WR
André Davis with a 53-yard touchdown pass to take a 36-35 lead with 57 seconds to play. On the ensuing drive, Collins
marched his team downfield to set up a 29-yard game-winning field goal by Bironas, who kicked an NFL-record eight
field goals in the Titans’ 38-36 win.
