The Texans (2-0) continue the best start in franchise history after beating the Carolina Panthers 34-21 in Bank of
America Stadium. The Panthers jumped to an early first-quarter lead with two touchdown receptions from QB Jake
Delhomme to WR Steve Smith. The Texans regrouped and responded with a quick three-play scoring drive that ended
in a 31-yard touchdown pass from QB Matt Schaub to WR Andre Johnson. It was Johnson’s 19th career touchdown
catch, which is a Texans’ individual receiving touchdown record. After the Texans’ defense held, Schaub turned to the
running game to move the offense downfield, ultimately connecting with Johnson for a nine-yard touchdown pass to tie
the game at 14-14. The Texans defense proved their might with rookie DT Amobi Okoye registering the first two sacks
of his career in the second quarter, helping the offense get back on the field and put together a drive before halftime.
That drive set up K Kris Brown’s 25-yard field goal, giving Houston a 17-14 lead. The Texans began the second half with
another quick scoring drive that featured RB Ahman Green running into the end zone to put his team ahead 24-14. The
Texans then forced a fumble on the Carolina kickoff return, and WR Kevin Walter recovered the ball in the end zone
to make the lead 31-14. And Houston never looked back. CB Dunta Robison intercepted a Delhomme pass intended for
Smith in the third quarter. DT Anthony Maddox chipped in a fourth-quarter sack. The Texans’ offense used the running
game to pound through the Carolina defense and set up a fourth quarter 33-yard field goal from Brown, making the
score 34-14. With minutes left in the game, the Delhomme connected with Smith for a 74-yard touchdown, but it was
too little, too late. The Texans had already sealed the win, finishing with a final score of 34-21.
