The Texans (5-5) improved to the best record they have had after 10 games with a 23-10 win over the New Orleans
Saints in Reliant Stadium. Houston scored 17 points before halftime and stayed on top with tough defense in the second
half that kept the Saints (4-6) scoreless. The Texans fumbled on their opening drive when TE Owen Daniels got hit high
by CB Mike McKenzie. The Saints recovered at Houston’s 38-yard line and then capitalized with a 52-yard field goal by K
Olindo Mare. On the ensuing possession, WR Andre Johnson, who had missed the last seven games with a knee sprain,
got in front of CB Jason David for a 73-yard touchdown pass from QB Matt Schaub to put Houston ahead 7-3. Early in the
second quarter, CB Von Hutchins intercepted a pass tipped by TE Eric Johnson. Houston fumbled on its next possession
and QB Drew Brees drove the ball 43 yards, connecting with WR Devery Henderson on a six-yard touchdown pass to
give the Saints a 10-7 lead. The Texans immediately responded with Schaub marching the offense downfield 70 yards
and hitting TE Joel Dreessen in the end zone with a 10-yard pass to make it 14-10 with 2:16 left in the second quarter. On
the next possession DE Mario Williams sacked Brees and knocked the ball loose for his first career forced fumble and
a 10-yard loss. It looked like the Texans had recovered, but officials ruled the Saints had possession. A Texans’ threeand-out
defensive stop helped to set up a 36-yard field goal by K Kris Brown at the end of the first half, giving Houston a
17-10 lead. Early in the fourth quarter, Johnson tipped a pass from Brees that was intercepted by LB Morlon Greenwood
to give Houston the ball at the 38. The interception resulted in Brown booting in a 53-yard field goal to make the score
20-10. The Saints then drove the ball to Houston’s 43-yard line, but on fourth-and-two CB Fred Bennett batted down a
pass intended for WR David Patten. The Texans then relied on RB Ron Dayne to eat up the clock before Brown kicked
a 23-yard field goal that made it 23-10 with 1:57 to play. Dayne finished the game with 89 yards rushing and Johnson
recorded 120 receiving yards to help the Texans earn the 23-10 victory.
