The Texans (3-5) dropped their third consecutive game, falling to the San Diego Chargers 35-10 at Qualcomm Stadium.
Houston got behind early when the Chargers scored on their second drive of the game with a 49-yard pass from QB
Philip Rivers to TE Antonio Gates. On the ensuing possession, the Texans were forced to punt and LS Bryan Pittman
snapped the ball over P Matt Turk’s head, sending the ball into the end zone. Turk stumbled trying to recover and CB
Antonio Cromartie jumped on it for a 14-0 Chargers’ lead. The Texans opened the second quarter with a 56-yard drive,
resulting in a 40-yard field goal by K Kris Brown to make the score 14-3.The Chargers then kicked it into high gear.
Rivers led a 64-yard drive, hitting Gates in the end zone with a 31-yard touchdown pass. The Texans, meanwhile, could
not catch a break. QB Matt Schaub moved the ball to the San Diego 39-yard line, but was picked off by Cromartie on
a short pass intended for WR Kevin Walter. Cromartie returned the interception 70 yards for a touchdown, giving his
team a 28-3 lead. On the ensuing drive, Schaub threw another interception to Cromartie. After the play, the Texans
quarterback was leveled by San Diego CB Drayton Florence and forced to leave the game with a head injury. The
Chragers continued to charge ahead as Rivers connected with WR Chris Chambers on a 14-yard touchdown pass to
boost the score to 35-3. The Texans showed life in the second half. DE Mario Williams brought down Rivers in the third
quarter for a two-yard loss. The team scored its first touchdown in the fourth quarter when QB Sage Rosenfels hit TE
Joel Dreessen in the end zone with a 28-yard pass, but the Chargers’ damage had already been done. The Texans
gained 367 yards of total offense, more than100 yards than the Chargers totaled; however, San Diego controlled the
entire game, ultimately winning 35-10.
