Educati<strong>on</strong>al Objectives:<br />

1. The participant will be able to identify mandated hepatitis B screening tests for the acute dialysis patient.<br />

2. The participant will be able to describe isolati<strong>on</strong> precauti<strong>on</strong>s for the HBV positive patient<br />

3. The participant will be able to identify screening for Hepatitis C in the dialysis populati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

C<strong>on</strong>tent Descripti<strong>on</strong>:<br />

Comprehensive infecti<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>trol in the dialysis populati<strong>on</strong> with Hepatitis B Virus (HBV)is essential to prevent<br />

the outbreak and spread of HBV to other acutely ill patients. Since RRT may be d<strong>on</strong>e by a variety of nursing<br />

specialties, it is paramount that all caregivers involved in the care of dialysis patients have a thorough understanding<br />

of the CDC stringent isolati<strong>on</strong> procedures for this populati<strong>on</strong>. This course will review the mandated<br />

Hepatitis B screening for dialysis patients, and discuss interpretati<strong>on</strong> of the results. Isolati<strong>on</strong> procedures for the<br />

HBV positive patient mandated by the CDC will be reviewed and clarified. Additi<strong>on</strong>al informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> the incidence<br />

and prevalence of HBV, HCV will be presented.<br />
