Educati<strong>on</strong>al Objectives:<br />
1. The participant will be able to identify two comp<strong>on</strong>ents of a competency<br />
2. The participant will be able to discuss three validati<strong>on</strong> methods for competency.<br />
3. The participant will be able to identify how a c<strong>on</strong>tinuous quality assurance program is integral to c<strong>on</strong>tinuing<br />
competency assessment.<br />
C<strong>on</strong>tent Descripti<strong>on</strong>:<br />
What defines competence? How are we sure our patients are receiving safe quality care <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> competent nurses?<br />
The presentati<strong>on</strong> discusses the comp<strong>on</strong>ents of a competency and various levels of competence. Competency<br />
models are presented as well as evaluati<strong>on</strong> tools for specific types of competencies. The UCSD mentorship program<br />
is presented and benefits identified. The participant will have tools identified that will help to formulate<br />
their instituti<strong>on</strong>s competency program. C<strong>on</strong>tinuous quality m<strong>on</strong>itoring will be presented as important comp<strong>on</strong>ent<br />
of maintaining quality patient care.<br />
