Educati<strong>on</strong>al Objectives:<br />
1. Understand the treatment of patients with severe hyp<strong>on</strong>atremia<br />
2. Recognize overcorrecti<strong>on</strong> of hyp<strong>on</strong>atremia and how to manage this problem<br />
3. Understand the c<strong>on</strong>cept of free water clearance and how to apply this to patient care.<br />
4. Understand the treatments for severe hyperkalemia in the patient with kidney disease<br />
C<strong>on</strong>tent Descripti<strong>on</strong>:<br />
This sessi<strong>on</strong> will focus <strong>on</strong> comm<strong>on</strong> electrolyte problems encountered in patients admitted to the intensive care<br />
unit. The sessi<strong>on</strong> is case-based and interactive with presentati<strong>on</strong> of cases that cover such problems as hyp<strong>on</strong>atremia,<br />
hyperkalemia, and acid-base abnormalities. In all cases, a practical approach is stressed that is based<br />
up<strong>on</strong> physiological principles that can be applied to other cases that the clinician may encounter in the ICU setting.<br />
