Biomarkers in AKI: Current Status and Needs<br />

1. Identify the most validated AKI biomarkers in AKI and their advantages and disadvantages<br />
2. Discuss the performance of AKI biomarkers for diagnosis, prognosis, and recovery of renal functi<strong>on</strong> and death<br />
3. Describe the areas of need for c<strong>on</strong>temporary biomarkers of AKI<br />
C<strong>on</strong>tent Descripti<strong>on</strong>:<br />
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is comm<strong>on</strong> in hospitalized patients and is independently associated with morbidity<br />
and mortality. Novel biomarkers of AKI have shown the capacity to diagnose AKI earlier than serum creatinine.<br />
Promising diagnostic injury markers include neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), kidney injury<br />
molecule 1 (KIM-1), interleukin 18 (IL-18) and liver-type fatty acid binding protein (L-FABP). Each of these<br />
biomarkers al<strong>on</strong>g with newer biomarkers will be discussed with their capacity to diagnose, stage, and prognosticate<br />
AKI.<br />
