Cash Handling – What You Need to Know
Risks with Cash Handling
Any business activity handling cash and valuables, whether large or small, is at
risk from armed robbery. It is essential, therefore that effective systems are in
place to minimise the risk and the potential threat to the safety and wellbeing
of workers and members of the public.
Delegates and OHS representatives should be familiar with the cash handling and
violence prevention policies and procedures for their workplace. This Factsheet
simply provides general guidance and advice that should be supplemented by
the practices and procedures of the specific workplace.
Who is at Risk?
Employees who handle money or valuables are at risk of violence. Bus, tram
and rail workplaces at risk include buses and trams, stations, booking and sales
offices, and administrative offices.
It’s the Law!
Obligations under NSW OHS Act require employers to provide a safe workplace
and identify and minimize risks. If your workplace handles cash then everyone
in the workplace should be aware of the potential for armed robbery and take
steps to prevent workplace accidents, injuries and illnesses that may result.
Robbery and assault are deemed as serious incidents and must be
immediately reported to WorkCover through their serious incident reporting
hotline: 13 10 50.
