Summary
Over the last decade WorkCover NSW has implemented a program of major
reform to occupational health and safety legislation. This has resulted in
significant changes to the way that we manage workplace health and safety
and to the responsibilities of everyone in the workplace.
The new laws require employers to:
• adopt a systematic risk management approach to workplace health and
safety hazards
• implement specific risk control measures
• consult with all employees on OHS matters that affect their health and
safety.
It is the responsibility of every employer to consult with all their employees
to determine the most effective way of managing their workplace health and
safety.
It is also the responsibility of the employer, the management chain, OHS
committee members and OHS representatives to have a thorough understanding
and implement the requirements of the NSW OHS Act 2000, OHS Regulation
2001, OHS Consultation Code of Practice and any other relevant guidance
material that supports the legislation. This preventative action will assist in
making workplaces safer and help to keep employees healthy and unharmed.
