Transport and Storage – General
Australian Safety and Compensation Council, Information Sheet on Transport and
Storage, 2007 provides the following summary information on injury claims and types
across the Transport and Storage Industry up to the end of 2005.
In 2004-2005, there were 11.180 claims for compensation from employees in the
industry off work for one or more weeks. This equates to 31 employees each day
requiring one ort more weeks off work because of work-related injury or disease.
While the incidence rate of claims in the industry has fallen 21% from 40 claims per
1000 employees in 1996-97 to 30 per 1000 employees in 2004-2005, (the rate in NSW
was 36 per 1000 employees) it remains well above the rate for Australia of 16.6 claims
per 1000 employees, and is the highest of all industries.

Similarly, the number of compensated fatalities in the industry ranged between 38 in
2003-04 and 43 in 2004-05. In 2004-05 the fatality incidence rate was 11.4 fatalities
per 1000 employees. This was over four times greater than the rate for Australia of
2.5 fatalities per 1000 employees.
