Cash Handling Risk Assessment Checklist
Check these hazards against common factors that might increase the risk of
robbery and violence using the checklist.

1. Do you have any form of security system (e.g. electronic sensors,
CCTV)?
Is it advertised to customers?
Is it working effectively?

2. Is there a clear view of the service area and cash register from
outside that is not obstructed by signs or window displays?
3. Do you have alarms and back up staff procedures for staff working
alone in work areas handling cash?
4. Do you minimise cash levels and have procedures to manage and
bank cash?
5. Have you or your employees been trained to detect warning signs
of violence or robbery and how to react if there is an incident?

Robbery Prevention Checklist
These steps can help to minimise the risk of violence or robbery. Do You:
• Greet everyone who enters the work area, bus or tram. Be friendly and look
briefly into their eyes.
• Move away from the sales counter when there are no customers. Since
robbers prefer to enter and leave the store quickly, if the staff are not near
the counter, the business may be a less attractive target.
• Keep the number of signs and counter-top displays to a minimum. Good
visibility around the counter and from the outside will help deter thefts.
• If someone suspicious is standing in line, ask the person ahead of them “are
you together?” The person ahead will usually turn around and look at the
other person.
