Department of English<br />

The Department of English has two degrees focused on the training of teachers in English; the Bachelor<br />

of Education (BEd in English) and the Master of Education (MEd). The MEd program is described in<br />

the section on Graduate Programs. The department offers courses in critical thinking, communication<br />

skills, and scientific and technical writing as part of the <strong>University</strong> General Requirement (UGR)<br />

program.<br />

Bachelor of Education (BEd in English)<br />

Overview<br />

The BEd in English (Elementary Education Program) “Teacher as Facilitator of Learning” is designed<br />

for pre-service teachers who have not received formal professional preparation in kindergarten through<br />

elementary teaching at an accredited Faculty or university. The program responds to <strong>ALHOSN</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> mission of developing up-to-date programs. It is both anchored to and aligned <strong>with</strong> the<br />

Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI) standards. The program has been prepared<br />

based on the new trends in teacher education namely performance-based education.<br />

Goals<br />

The Department of Education is committed to a learner-centered philosophy, environment, and focus.<br />

Planning, research, and collaboration are the key to being successful in preparing teachers for their<br />

roles in helping all students learn. To assist in meeting our goals we will form collaborative<br />

partnerships <strong>with</strong> the Ministry of Education and Youth, school zones, schools around the country as<br />

well as all stakeholders involved in the education of the youth in the UAE.<br />

Objectives<br />

The Department of Education Program will enable candidates to:<br />

1. Show evidence of systemic planning.<br />

2. Create learning experiences that make instruction meaningful to their future students.<br />

3. Use their knowledge and skills of effective verbal, nonverbal, media and information technology<br />

techniques to foster active inquiry, collaboration and supportive interaction in the classroom.<br />

4. Understand and use a variety of instructional strategies, including those that are adapted to<br />

diverse learners to encourage development of critical thinking, problem solving and performance<br />

skills.<br />

Outcomes<br />

(Adopted form ACEI 2000 Standards developed by Association for Childhood Education International-<br />

ACEI).<br />

1. Candidates know, understand, and use the major concepts, principles, theories, and<br />

research related to development of children and young adolescents. Candidates construct<br />

learning opportunities that support individual students’ development, acquisition of knowledge,<br />

and motivation.<br />

2. Candidates know, understand, and use the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures<br />

of content for students across grades.<br />

3. Candidates can create meaningful learning experiences that develop students’ competence<br />

in subject matter and skills for various developmental levels.<br />

Curriculum<br />

The BEd in English requires a minimum of 129 credit hours including “Student Teaching”. The BEd<br />

Program includes 42 credits for <strong>University</strong> requirements, 24 credits for elective courses <strong>with</strong> the<br />

remainder being compulsory courses as shown in the Study Plan below.<br />
