FES 150 Natural Sciences (3 = 3 + 0)<br />

Prerequisite: None<br />

This course aims at providing students <strong>with</strong> fundamentals of chemistry, physics and biology, and widening<br />

their appreciation and conceptual understanding of the application of sciences and technologies for the<br />

development of modern life. Topics covered include: physical laws, depleting and renewable sources of energy,<br />

earth and the atmosphere, environmental pollution and its sources and consequences; concepts of chemical<br />

reactions, chemical compounds and their uses in our life, basics of heredity and gene expression, and the concept<br />

of biotechnology and its applications in contemporary life.<br />

FES 156 Natural Sciences for Engineers (3 = 3 + 0)<br />

Prerequisite: None<br />

The aim of this course is to introduce the fundamental of biology and earth science and widening their appreciation<br />

and conceptual understanding of the application of sciences and technologies for the development of modern life.<br />

The subjects which will be discussed are the nature of living things; the history of life on the earth; human biology;<br />

earth and the atmosphere; ecology and environment.<br />

FES 160 Research Methods (3 = 3 + 0)<br />

Prerequisite: None<br />

The course aims at introducing to students fundamentals of research methods which can be applied to different<br />

fields, and developing their research skills. Topics covered include defining research problems and objectives,<br />

hypothesis, sources of information, data types and collection, data analysis and presentation of results, and<br />

drawing conclusions. Emphasis is put on the ethics of research at its various stages.<br />

FES 201 Matrix Algebra for Engineers (3 = 3 + 0)<br />

Prerequisite: MTH 005<br />

Complex numbers; matrices and basic matrix operations; system of linear equations; determinants; eigenvalues<br />

and eigenvectors; vector spaces, orthogonality, dot product.<br />

FES 202 Introduction to Statistics (3 = 3 + 0)<br />

Prerequisite: FES 102<br />

This course is an introduction to the nature of statistics, sampling, descriptive statistics, probability, its application<br />

for engineering, probability distributions for discrete random variables and continuous random variables;<br />

sampling; Confidence intervals.<br />

FES 203 Statistics for Engineers (3 = 3 + 0)<br />

Prerequisites: FES 202, FES 103<br />

This course enables students to understand Important concepts in Inferential statistics concerning (means,<br />

variances and Proportions), hypothesis testing, nonparametric tests, Curve fitting, multiple regression, and<br />

Factorial Experimentation and applications to reliability, quality control.<br />

FES 204 Introduction to Discrete Structures (3 = 3 + 0)<br />

Prerequisite: FES 102<br />

Topics to be covered include: set algebra including mappings and relations; algebraic structures including semigroups<br />

and groups; elements of the theory of directed and undirected graphs; Boolean algebra and prepositional<br />

logic; these structures applied to various areas of computer science.<br />
