FIN 201 Principles of Finance (3 = 3 + 0)<br />

Prerequisite: ACT 210<br />

This course introduces students to the role of financial management in business firms. It emphasizes on the basic<br />

concepts in finance and techniques used in financial decision-making. Topics to be covered include financial<br />

analysis and planning, time value of money, interest rates and bond valuation, stock valuation, risk and return and<br />

capital budgeting.<br />

FIN 301 Corporate Finance (3 = 3 + 0)<br />

Prerequisite: FIN 201<br />

This course builds on the concepts introduced in FIN 201. It explains the theory of corporate finance and teaches<br />

students the analytical techniques to apply theory in practical situations. It considers the impact of risk on the cost of<br />

capital and investment decisions and proceeds to discuss advanced topics in corporate finance. Topics include<br />

project analysis, risk and expected return, the cost of capital, financial leverage, capital structure policy, dividend<br />

policy, options and corporate finance, derivative securities and risk management, mergers and acquisitions, and<br />

leasing.<br />

FIN 451 Portfolio Theory and Investment Analysis (3 = 3 + 0)<br />

Prerequisite: FIN 201<br />

The course exposes students to the fundamental concepts of investment and portfolio theory. The course deals<br />

<strong>with</strong> important aspects of financial securities and markets. The course examines topics such as optimal portfolio<br />

choice, evaluating portfolio performance, portfolio diversification, arbitrage and option pricing, security analysis,<br />

and efficient market hypothesis.<br />

FIN 452 International Finance (3 = 3 + 0)<br />

Prerequisite: FIN 201, MGT 303<br />

This course provides background on the global aspects of finance and focuses on financial management from the<br />

perspective of multinational corporations (MNC) and other firms that engage in international transactions. Topics<br />

covered in the course include the global financial environment, exchange rate determination, currency derivatives,<br />

purchasing power parity (PPP), international trade and foreign direct investment, international analysis and<br />

securities, conditions, models of exchange rate determination, multinational capital budgeting, and multinational<br />

cost of capital and capital structure.<br />

FIN 453 Islamic Banking and Finance (3 = 3 + 0)<br />

Prerequisite: FIN 201<br />

This course offers a clear and understandable examination of this dynamic area of finance. It will help participants<br />

to fully understand the fundamental principles underlying modern Islamic finance, as well as modern practices<br />

prevailing in this industry. It provides a basic knowledge of the general principles of sharia’a (fiqh al muamalat)<br />

and its application to Islamic banking and finance, the Islamic banking model and alternative modes of financing,<br />

financial markets and the structuring of Islamic investment funds, and the different types of Islamic finance<br />

contracts and products. It also examines current issues in the theory and practice of Islamic banking and the<br />

practices used in the Islamic financial markets.<br />

FIN 454 Financial Institutions and Markets (3 = 3 + 0) (Tentative)<br />

Prerequisite: FIN 201<br />

The purpose of this course is to instruct students about the financial system and the various types of financial<br />

institutions and markets. It examines topics such as the components of the financial system; deposit-taking<br />

institutions; non-deposit-taking institutions; the money market; the capital markets. The course also exposes<br />

students to the interest rates in general; the structure of interest rate; foreign exchange markets; and international<br />

capital markets.<br />

FIN 456 Insurance and Risk Management (3 = 3 + 0) (Tentative)<br />

Prerequisite: FIN 201<br />

This course introduces the fundamentals of insurance and risk management. It examines risk management issues<br />

faced by firms and individuals and discusses ways to protect firm value and personal wealth. The course covers<br />

the areas of general risk management process, property and liability insurance, life and health insurance,<br />

annuities and employee benefits. The insurance industry and regulatory concerns are also addressed.<br />

FIN 457 Special Topics in Finance (3 = 3 + 0)<br />

Prerequisites: FIN 30, FIN 451, FIN 454<br />

This course shall provide critical analysis of current issues and trends in finance and financial theories,<br />

research, and practice. Emphasis shall also be on the analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of contemporary financial<br />
