ACT 601 Managerial Accounting<br />

Prerequisites: ACT 501<br />

This course explores the effective use of accounting information in support of organizational decision making. The<br />

identification, measurement, preparation, interpretation, and communication of financial information in support of<br />

planning, evaluation, and control functions are discussed. Inventory, allocation of costs, planning and budgeting<br />

processes, and financial evaluation of organizational performance are also included.<br />

ACT 611 Analysis of Financial Statements<br />

Prerequisites: ACT 601 and FIN 611<br />

The purpose of the course is to provide students <strong>with</strong> tools to analyze and exploit information in corporate<br />

financial statements. The course will introduce students to how the information in financial statements is used for<br />

valuation, credit risk assessment, and other economic decisions. The course will also examine the issues that<br />

corporate managers face as they design and implement financial reporting strategies, increasing students’<br />

awareness of potential earnings management. The framework developed in this course is intended to enhance<br />

analytical skills for all students planning careers that will bring them in contact <strong>with</strong> financial statements.<br />

ACT 612 Advanced Financial Reporting<br />

Prerequisites: ACT 601<br />

This course provides students <strong>with</strong> the knowledge of financial reporting standards and practices, and to provide<br />

insight into (a) the process of setting accounting standards as well as (b) recent developments in the setting of<br />

international accounting standards. In this way, they will become more informed and incisive analysts of financial<br />

statements, whether as users or preparers.<br />

ACT 613 Advanced Topics in Accounting<br />

Prerequisites: ACT 601<br />

This course is an in-depth study of advanced accounting topics <strong>with</strong> significant emphasis on business<br />

combinations and consolidation practices, and cost accounting, including budgeting, standard costs and cost and<br />

profit analysis for decision making.<br />

ACT 699 Special Topics in Accounting<br />

Prerequisites: FIN 601<br />

This course shall provide critical analysis of current trends and issues in accounting theory, research, and practice.<br />

Emphasis shall also be on the analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of contemporary accounting issues <strong>with</strong> specific<br />

reference to UAE and GCC countries. The syllabus will be prepared by a competent faculty member and must be<br />

approved by the Chair of the Department.<br />

ECN 501 Managerial Economics<br />

Prerequisites None<br />

The course introduces the concepts and methods of economic analysis that are essential for effective managerial<br />

decision-making. The course begins <strong>with</strong> a review of basic economic concepts, such as opportunity cost, profit,<br />

and marginal analysis and then examines the market forces of supply and demand, define elasticity and<br />

examine its role in managerial decision-making, and study the theory of individual behavior on which market<br />

demand is based. In the next segment of the course, we review production, cost, and revenue concepts, and we<br />

analyze input demand and output supply decisions in the so-called “perfectly competitive” markets. In the last<br />

segment of the course, market power and study the influence of government on the marketplace will be discussed.<br />

FIN 501 Financial Management<br />

Prerequisites: None<br />

This course introduces students to the role of financial management in business firms. It emphasizes on the basic<br />

concepts in finance and techniques used in financial decision-making. Topics to be covered include financial<br />

analysis and planning, time value of money, interest rates and bond valuation, stock valuation, risk and return and<br />

capital budgeting.<br />

FIN 601 Corporate Finance<br />

Prerequisites: FIN 501, ECN 501<br />

This course will explore the theory and practice of corporate finance. Material covered will focus on areas of<br />

relevance to corporate managers as financial decision-makers. Corporate financial decisions include how to raise<br />

capital (for example through security issues, bank borrowings, selling assets, et cetera), and what to do <strong>with</strong> it<br />

once it has been raised (for example investment in projects, payment of dividends, repurchasing securities).<br />

Special emphasis will be placed upon the understanding of the role of the financial manager, the goals of the<br />

firm, and the agency relationship between the managers and shareholders in the context of these goals. The course<br />
