This course examines major theoretical issues in the field of Sociology from the perspective of an emerging<br />

global society and the debates surrounding its social, cultural, political and economic structuring. The focus is on<br />

such topics as the changing world of work, global inequalities involving gender, race and class, population and<br />

migration, global tourism, global crime, the mass media and consumer culture and social movements such as<br />

feminist and green movements.<br />

FAS 210 Politics, Government and Planning (3 = 3 + 0)<br />

Prerequisite: None<br />

The major focus of this course is a critical examination of governmental institutions at all levels that affect cities<br />

and regions. Topics include government and democratic theory, the impact of globalization and urbanization,<br />

political and administrative structures, intergovernmental relations and major actors, such as business and citizen<br />

groups. The course will also address the major governmental challenges facing cities and regions today.<br />

FAS 220 Understanding Society (3 = 3 + 0)<br />

Prerequisite: None<br />

The origins and significance of cities and regions in human history are explored in the context of<br />

contemporary sociological theories of urban development. Within this context, students will learn about the rise of<br />

differing forms of social inequality, the urban/rural dichotomy, the global city, cycles of growth/decay, and their<br />

impact on social life.<br />

FAS 230 Introduction to Psychology (3 = 3 + 0)<br />

Prerequisite: None<br />

This course is an introductory survey of the methods and findings of modern scientific psychology, including<br />

history and methodology, biological psychology, sensation and perception, learning and motivation, verbal and<br />

cognitive processes, development psychology, social psychology, individual differences (intelligence and<br />

personality), and clinical psychology.<br />

FAS 300 Industrial Psychology (3 = 3 + 0)<br />

Prerequisite: FAS 230<br />

This course covers the theories, methods, findings and applications of industrial and organizational psychology<br />

including: personnel recruitment and selection; employee training and development; performance appraisal, work<br />

attitudes and motivation; leadership and group processes; organizational design.<br />

FAS 310 Human Behavior in Cross Cultural Context (3 = 3 + 0)<br />

Prerequisite: FAS 230<br />

A study of the differing values, ethics and attitudes <strong>with</strong> specific reference to cultural practices and prohibitions in<br />

business relationships. Topics include cultural identity and biases; verbal and nonverbal intercultural<br />

communication; code usage; and developing cross-cultural competence in interpersonal relationships.<br />

FAS 320 Sociology of Work (3 = 3 + 0)<br />

Prerequisite: FAS 130<br />

This course examines recent developments in the theory and practice of work, including domestic work,<br />

globalization, gender, resistance, child labor and labor relations. The theoretical approaches incorporate<br />

theories of time, technology, identify, change, and discipline. Case studies of individual nations highlight the<br />

international differences in sociological approaches to workplace issues.<br />

FES 100 Mathematics (3 = 3 + 0)<br />

Prerequisite: MTH 005<br />

This course deals <strong>with</strong> basic concepts of mathematics and its application. Selected topics include the real number<br />

system, equations, polynomials, sets and percents. It also includes geometry, trigonometry, the Cartesian<br />

coordinate system and various measurement tools (as area, perimeter and volume).<br />
