FIN 611 International Finance<br />

Prerequisites: FIN 601<br />

This course provides background on the global aspects of finance and focuses on financial management from the<br />

perspective of multinational corporations and other firms that engage in international transactions. Topics covered<br />

in the course include the global financial environment, exchange rate determination, international trade and<br />

foreign direct investment, international analysis and securities, international arbitrage and interest rate parity,<br />

relationships among inflation, interest rates, and exchange rates, and international corporate finance.<br />

FIN 612 Investment Management<br />

Prerequisites: FIN 601<br />

This course examines the application of principles and techniques of investment management in solving<br />

investment problems of individuals and financial institutions. It considers apportionment of investment funds<br />

among alternatives, analysis of risk, valuation timing of security acquisitions. This course focuses on investment<br />

analysis and valuation of financial instruments, portfolio theory and management, and efficient market theory.<br />

FIN 613 Financial Risk Management<br />

Prerequisites: FIN 601<br />

This course is designed to acquaint students <strong>with</strong> the fundamental issues in business development and risk<br />

management using financial markets. It deals <strong>with</strong> the ways in which different risk sources are quantified and<br />

managed by financial institutions. Emphasize will be given on how hedgers can reduce their risks using different<br />

vehicle such as forwards contracts and options. Among the topics covered are interest rate risk, value at risk<br />

(VaR), volatility, market risk, credit risk, operational risk, liquidity risk, and the credit crisis of 2007.<br />

FIN 614 Portfolio Theory and Strategy<br />

Prerequisites: FIN 601<br />

This course provides an in-depth discussion of investment and portfolio management, in terms of both theory and<br />

practice. Students are expected to learn about the investment alternatives that are available in the market. To<br />

facilitate this process, students must develop and manage a portfolio that satisfies a specific risk-return objective.<br />

In addition, students are required to work on an extended research project designed to provide them <strong>with</strong> indepth<br />

exposure to some aspect of the theory and/or practice of investments.<br />

FIN 615 Financial Planning and Evaluation<br />

Prerequisites: FIN 601<br />

This course examines the knowledge required and the competencies needed to manage personal financial<br />

resources. It develops the principles upon which effective management is based. Emphasis is placed on the<br />

understanding, mathematical analysis, and evaluation of financial products and strategies. The perspective taken<br />

in this course is an active decision- making one as opposed to a passive information acquisition one. Students<br />

will be guided to not only learn the basics, but to implement them in a way that will improve their own personal<br />

financial situations, and to enhance their professional competencies and credibility if they work in the financial<br />

services industry. Topics include the time value of money, debt management, tax planning, risk management and<br />

insurance, investment management, retirement planning, and estate planning. Issues relating to the advisory<br />

process in the context of the financial services industry are also discussed.<br />

FIN 651 Islamic Banking and Finance<br />

Prerequisites: FIN 601<br />

This course offers a clear and understandable examination of this dynamic area of finance. It will help participants<br />

to fully understand the fundamental principles underlying modern Islamic finance, as well as modern practices<br />

prevailing in this industry. It provides a basic knowledge of the general principles of sharia’a (fiqh al muamalat)<br />

and its application to Islamic banking and finance, the Islamic banking model and alternative modes of financing,<br />

financial markets and the structuring of Islamic investment funds, and the different types of Islamic finance<br />

contracts and products. It also examines current issues in the theory and practice of Islamic banking and the<br />

practices used in the Islamic financial markets.<br />

FIN 659 Special Topics in Finance<br />

Prerequisites: FIN 601<br />

This course shall provide critical analysis of current trends and issues in financial theory, research, and<br />

practice. Emphasis shall also be on the analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of contemporary financial issues <strong>with</strong><br />

specific reference to UAE and GCC countries. The syllabus will be prepared by a competent faculty member and<br />

must be approved by the Chair of the Department.<br />
