The School Health Education Program (SHEP), Ghana 81Box 4.2: Examples <strong>of</strong> NGO Programs Operating in Ghana: World Education and Child andTeen FocusWorld Education established the Strengthening HIV/AIDS Partnership in Education (SHAPE)program in Ghana in 2001. In its first phase, the program worked in about 90 schools andcommunities in 15 districts. In 2005 the program entered a second phase, which aims to:• improve the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors <strong>of</strong> students, parents, and teachers regardingHIV/AIDS• increase the number <strong>of</strong> school-based activities related to HIV education, <strong>prevention</strong>, andsupport• increase the capacity <strong>of</strong> the education sector to respond to the epidemic• increase the capacity <strong>of</strong> teacher training colleges to address HIV/AIDS.SHEP staff have worked with SHAPE in a variety <strong>of</strong> areas, including:• policy development• preservice and in-service teacher training in participatory methodologies• school-based risk-reduction education• participatory and peer-to-peer education (life skills for students and teachers)• involvement <strong>of</strong> people living with HIV/AIDS (providing unique perspectives and experiencesthat can help young people reduce their own risk and eliminate bias toward people livingwith HIV/AIDS)• better linkages with health services (particularly youth-friendly services)• strengthened systems <strong>of</strong> nonformal and community education, particularly for out-<strong>of</strong>-schoolyouth.Partnership is a reciprocal relationship. As well as providing input into design and implementation<strong>of</strong> SHAPE activities, SHEP staff have also received capacity-building training andexpert input from SHAPE. CSOs deliver many SHAPE activities on the ground. District SHEPcoordinators oversee implementation <strong>of</strong> such interventions.Child and Teen Focus is a small-scale NGO that aims to reach adolescents with informationon sexuality and to provide counseling services on adolescent reproductive health. The programoperates in the Ga West District <strong>of</strong> the Greater Accra Region <strong>of</strong> Ghana. A partner <strong>of</strong>World Education’s SHAPE program, it undertakes teacher training; training <strong>of</strong> peer educators(in schools and communities); counseling services to schools and communities; radio <strong>programs</strong>;interactive lectures; and workshops and seminars.SHEP district coordinators play an important role in enabling Child and Teen staff to collaborateand interact with schools in their area. They also help heads <strong>of</strong> schools select teachingstaff for program training.that proposed activities are in line with the General Education ServicesHIV/AIDS Education Curriculum and Teachers’ Manual and the Alertmodel. Should stakeholders deviate significantly from the content or operation<strong>of</strong> the activities agreed with the SHEP coordinator, permission tooperate within schools may be withdrawn.
