The Expanded Life Planning Education Program (ELPE), Nigeria 195In 2001 the LPE teachers’ forum was set up. LPE teachers meet toexchange ideas and experiences with regard to implementing LPE lessonsin schools.EvaluationConducting evaluations and making use <strong>of</strong> their findings was one <strong>of</strong> themain strategies <strong>of</strong> the program. Evaluations were undertaken to detectchanges in knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors by stakeholders; investigatethe process, lessons, challenges, and outcomes <strong>of</strong> the program; and assistothers in replicating the program.The survey was readministered during a “process” evaluation in 2001–03and an “outcome” evaluation in 2003, when DFID funding ended. Students,teachers, principals, health providers, religious leaders, and parents wereasked to respond to questions about:• major reproductive health and nonreproductive health issues facingstudents• student knowledge <strong>of</strong> reproductive health issues and issues associatedwith maturing• students’ social and sexual behavior• students’ perspectives on and concerns about issues that have direct andindirect bearings on them• students’ ability to deal with peer pressure, their use <strong>of</strong> leisure time, andtheir preferred sources <strong>of</strong> information on reproductive health andHIV/AIDS• parents’ perspectives on reproductive health and other issues relatingdirectly and indirectly to their children• the place <strong>of</strong> LPE in the life <strong>of</strong> schools• teachers’ perspectives on students’ social and sexual behavior• types <strong>of</strong> services and support system available for meeting identified needs• preferences <strong>of</strong> different stakeholders for different strategies for resolvingproblems• health providers’ knowledge, attitude, and practice <strong>of</strong> adolescent reproductivehealth issues and services and their opinion about access to suchservices• the quality <strong>of</strong> health facilities in the community.(c) The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development / The World Bank
