The goal <strong>of</strong> the program was to help youngpeople make more informed decisions by educating young women aboutthe health risk associated with having sex with sugar daddies and educatingyoung men about the health risk associated with having sex with classmateswho are sexually involved with older men.The lecture was conducted during the school day by a female field <strong>of</strong>ficerfrom ICS. To introduce the topic, the lecturer showed “Sara: The Trap,” aneducational video produced by UNICEF to warn young people about sugardaddies. (As most schools did not have electricity, ICS brought a small generatoralong with a TV and video cassette recorder to play the video.) Afterthe presentation, the ICS facilitator conducted a brief discussion about therisk sugar daddies present to all students in the class. On the board she drewthe following:Sugar daddiesYoung girlsYoung boysShe then presented students with data on the age distribution <strong>of</strong> HIV inKenya (table 7.1).This information was followed by a second illustration <strong>of</strong> the risks:HIV + sugar daddiesHIV + young girlsHIV + young boysThe field <strong>of</strong>ficer then conducted a brief question-and-answer sessionwith students.Free school uniformsThe program provided free school uniforms to 20,000 students.
