186 A Sourcebook <strong>of</strong> HIV/AIDS Prevention Programs, Vol. 2As in teacher training, participatory teaching-learning methods wereused, allowing peer educators to experience and become familiar with themethods before using some <strong>of</strong> them in their interaction with peers.Curricular Approach, Time Allocation, and AssessmentThe focus <strong>of</strong> teaching-learning was initially on core life-planning topics. Asit became apparent how serious the problem <strong>of</strong> HIV/AIDS was, the focusshifted to age-appropriate HIV <strong>prevention</strong> education, provided through:• drama, songs, dance, role-plays, storytelling, group discussions, and presentations• projects, cultural displays, workshops, assembly talks, and seminars• local excursions to places <strong>of</strong> interest, such as youth-friendly clinics, andcommunity outreach activities• peer counseling and referrals to youth-friendly health centers.Different kinds <strong>of</strong> activities are used to achieve different learning objectives.Peer counseling is used to positively influence students’ attitudes.Presentations and role-play are used to build skills. Group discussion andinformation, education, and communication materials are used to buildknowledge.The topics covered during LPE lessons include the following:• Communication skills• Peer pressure and how to deal with it• Sexuality, society, and culture• Human growth and development• STIs and HIV/AIDS• Prevention <strong>of</strong> pregnancy• Self-esteem• Child rights, including the right to say no to sex• Negotiation and decision-making skills• Sexual violence• Self-assessment <strong>of</strong> risk <strong>of</strong> HIV infection• Poverty-reduction/income-generation skill building• Time management.(c) The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development / The World Bank
