208 A Sourcebook <strong>of</strong> HIV/AIDS Prevention Programs, Vol. 2used as a weekly guideline for teaching FLHE as an integrated topic withinthe two carrier subjects. The scheme <strong>of</strong> work presents a sequential list <strong>of</strong>topics that should be taught each week in all junior grades in the state.Comprehensive sexuality education trainers’ resource manualThis manual was created for the original sexuality education curriculum andcovers the full range <strong>of</strong> topics <strong>of</strong> that curriculum. It is used by teachers as aresource should students raise issues not covered by the revised FLHE curriculum,such as condom usage.PostersLSMoE, AHI, and teachers prepared a range <strong>of</strong> posters for junior-secondaryschool teachers in Lagos. Teachers are expected to use these colorful postersto support teaching-learning. Topics addressed by the posters includephysical changes during puberty, how HIV/AIDS is and is not spread, nonstereotypicalroles (gender roles), menstruation and fertilization, and tipson healthy living.TrainingThe training component <strong>of</strong> the program targets carrier subject teachers andmaster trainers. Education on FHLE is also being integrated into tertiaryteacher education at the preservice level. It is expected that the NationalUniversities Commission, which sets standards for all universities in thefederation; the National Commission for Colleges <strong>of</strong> Education, which setsstandards for teacher education; and the National Teachers’ Institute, whichsupervises teachers’ in-service activities, will mainstream the FHLE curriculumin the schools they supervise. The Adeniran Ogunsanya College <strong>of</strong>Education, the Lagos State College <strong>of</strong> Primary Education, and Lagos StateUniversity have integrated FLHE into their preservice training courses.Teacher trainingTraining focuses on three areas: technical content; teachers’ comfort level inteaching about sexuality; and teaching methodologies appropriate to thecore learning domains (cognitive, affective, and behavioral). It seeks toincrease teachers’:• knowledge in the areas <strong>of</strong> sexuality most relevant in the FLHE program• understanding <strong>of</strong> their role in providing FLHE(c) The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development / The World Bank
