120 A Sourcebook of HIV/AIDS Prevention Programs, Vol. 2Red Cross, the Child Welfare Society of Kenya, and the Ministry ofHealth AIDS Control Unit.Peer-supporter materialsPeer-supporter materials prepared by PSABH working groups are usedduring training and in schools as reference materials. The materials seek tohelp peer supporters help young people make informed choices aboutrelationships and sexual behavior through skills and values development.School health club kitEvery participating school receives a school health club kit that covers:• life skills, living values, and related activities• goal setting• school health activities• HIV/AIDS management• dealing with external conflicting messages through song and dance• love and sex• setting one’s own agenda. They also receive a question box that enables students anonymously topost questions to be answered by teachers during class discussions.EvaluationEvaluation and research are essential parts of PSABH. They have enabledcontinuous review of program activities and objectives to ensure that measurableimpact is being made. According to program manager MaryGichuru, “Many programs deliver a ‘package’ that has been designed at thebeginning and is the same at the end. Staff are not always encouraged orsupported to adapt material in the light of changing circumstances andinformation. Programs can develop only if they have mechanisms torespond and adapt.”An important part of the rationale underlying the program has been thebelief that activities must start with detailed knowledge of the risks of HIVinfection from the perspective of the young person, including informationabout how risks start, develop, proceed, and can be avoided. Information isalso needed about the problems and challenges that those charged withdelivering prevention materials may face.(c) The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development / The World Bank
