All FLHE-trained teachers andstate personnel in Lagos State have been given copies. Teachers in otherstates in Nigeria also use the material.The manual provides a step-by-step guide to teaching the topics in theFLHE curriculum as well as other issues. It provides guidelines on how toset the tone in the classroom, deal with sensitive topics, keep parents andcaregivers informed, and related issues. It addresses topics such as relationships;human development; sexual health and behavior; skills; and sexuality,society, and culture. Additional information is provided to help teachersanswer questions students may pose.National family life and HIV education curriculumThe curriculum was developed through a participatory process facilitated byNERDC, the federal Ministry <strong>of</strong> Education, and AHI. To ensure socioculturalappropriateness, curriculum development drew on the perspectives <strong>of</strong>resource people from the five geopolitical zones <strong>of</strong> Nigeria.For each age group, the curriculum identifies the topics to be addressed,the performance objectives, the core contents, the activities to be conducted,and the teaching and learning materials to be used. A copy <strong>of</strong> theFLHE curriculum is available in each junior-secondary school. Teachersacross the country use it as a guide when developing their lessons.Integrated scheme <strong>of</strong> work for FLHEThe LSMoE Curriculum Department, in cooperation with teachers, AHI,and other experts, developed the integrated scheme <strong>of</strong> work for FLHE.
