Its origin in a city important to many <strong>of</strong>the world’s faith communities increased the likelihood that the morereligious-minded would consider it legitimate and acceptable.• The program materials are compact, simple, and robust. They can easilybe carried by hand or tied to a bicycle or pack animal. Neither electricitynor audio-visual equipment is needed, making them suitable for developing-countrysettings.ConclusionsOne <strong>of</strong> the first school-based HIV <strong>prevention</strong> <strong>programs</strong> in the world, JAIPoperates in Israel and many other countries. Its success can be related to anumber <strong>of</strong> factors:• The program has a simple, easily replicated formula that can be deliveredeasily to people in a wide range <strong>of</strong> contexts.• The program’s cartoon materials can be adapted to a wide range <strong>of</strong>situations.• The program has adapted to changes in knowledge about HIV/AIDS andthe cultural contexts in which the program is <strong>of</strong>fered.• The program’s use <strong>of</strong> volunteer medical students as AIDS educatorsallows messages to be delivered by people who are both authoritative andrespected and close in age and experience to learners.• The program’s contact with students over the course <strong>of</strong> their school andBENCHMARKATTAINMENT/COMMENT1.
