Chapter 10National Family Life HIV/AIDS Education CurriculumImplementation at a GlanceDescription: Curriculum-based HIV/AIDS and life-skills program injunior-secondary schools in Lagos StateNumber <strong>of</strong> schools participating: 334Coverage: About 42 percent <strong>of</strong> public junior-secondary schools inLagos State, reaching 320,000 young people. About 1,650 carrier subjectteachers and 100 staff members <strong>of</strong> the Lagos State Ministry <strong>of</strong>Education (LSMoE) received training.Target groups: Students aged 9–13 in public junior-secondary school.Secondary target group includes policy makers, principals, and parents.Components: The program includes six components:• Creating supportive environments and increasing stakeholders’knowledge and understanding• Increasing LSMoE’s capacity to implement the program• Providing in-school education• Developing materials• Disseminating information and providing technical support forscaling up the program• Monitoring and evaluating results.Establishment and duration: Meetings between the NGO Action HealthIncorporated (AHI) and LSMoE began in 2000; a planning meetingwas held in January 2003. Classroom delivery began in October 2003.By the end <strong>of</strong> 2004, implementation had commenced in the more than300 public junior-secondary schools in the state.Management: Coordinated by LSMoE, which also advocates for andpartially funds program implementation (paying all teacher salaries)Role <strong>of</strong> partners: AHI provides technical and financial support.
