78 A Sourcebook <strong>of</strong> HIV/AIDS Prevention Programs, Vol. 2GES has produced an HIV/AIDS curriculum that covers the followingtopics:• Information on HIV/AIDS• Information on HIV/AIDS for teachers• Signs and symptoms• Prevention <strong>of</strong> HIV• Understanding and respecting people living with HIV/AIDS• Caring for people living with HIV/ADIS• Social and economic impact <strong>of</strong> HIV/AIDS• Counseling.Monitoring and RecognitionMonitoring <strong>of</strong> SHEP activities occurs at various levels and takes a variety <strong>of</strong>forms:• The <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> the national SHEP coordinator receives reports from boththe regional and district levels. These reports give details <strong>of</strong> activitiescarried out and their impact. National-level personnel also monitor activities.Within MoESS the outcomes <strong>of</strong> all SHEP activities are presented atannual review meetings, where inputs from SHEP partners are presented.Partners are encouraged to integrate monitoring and evaluation into <strong>programs</strong>their organizations sponsor.• Regional SHEP coordinators monitor SHEP activities within theirregions by visiting program sites to ensure that standards and quality aremaintained.• SHEP coordinators and other partners involved in SHEP activities conductmonitoring at the district level. District SHEP coordinators monitorall school health implementation within the district. They are supportedactively by circuit supervisors, who oversee 20 or more basic schoolswithin each district.• Head teachers are expected to evaluate the content and scope <strong>of</strong> teachers’lesson plans and notes to ensure that lessons integrate learning aboutHIV/AIDS and other aspects <strong>of</strong> school health.A simple monitoring tool has been developed to enable district SHEPcoordinators to assess the performance <strong>of</strong> the Alert model in districts orschools (table 4.1).(c) The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development / The World Bank
