<strong>Core</strong> <strong>Strategy</strong> <strong>Options</strong>The future role of our town and local centres within a town centre hierarchy which provideoptions concerning the focus for future retail growth, services and facilities.Strategic improvements required to the local transport network to ac<strong>com</strong>modate futuredevelopment and approaches to reduce the need to travel by car.4.9 <strong>Options</strong> set out in this section have been established following responses received to theissues and options consultation and informed by the evidence base. For further detail concerningthe development of options please refer to the following documents:Area Profiles for Christchurch and East Dorset,Key Issue papers:The Key <strong>Strategy</strong>Green BeltTransportNatural EnvironmentTransportHousingAffordable HousingEconomyTown CentresIdentifying a Settlement Hierarchy4.10 The two Districts contain a wide range of settlement types including areas that form part ofthe wider Bournemouth and Poole conurbation through to rural hamlets. A clear approach to theplanning of our settlements is necessary, based on their current characteristics and function andthe <strong>Core</strong> <strong>Strategy</strong> vision for the future. It is therefore proposed that there should be a settlementhierarchy to focus the distribution of development across the area and set out the general role ofindividual settlements.4.11 The Issues and <strong>Options</strong> consultation asked a series of questions about the function and roleof the settlements throughout the area. This, along with evidence produced on a regional scale byRoger Tym and Partners, as well as consideration of the services and facilities of the settlementshas been used to develop a hierarchy.Rules, Regulations and Advice4.12 NationalThe <strong>Core</strong> <strong>Strategy</strong> should promote sustainable patterns of development which protect thenatural and historic environment, and ensure high quality development through good designand the efficient use of land.New development should be well connected to public transport, <strong>com</strong>munity facilities and servicesto reduce the need to travel by car, reduce the length of journeys and make it safer and easierfor people to access jobs by public transport, walking and cycling and to lower carbon emissions.New economic growth and development of main town centre uses are to be focused in existingcentres.Development should be located in or on the edge of existing settlements where employment,housing (including affordable housing), services and other facilities should be provided closetogether.
