Healthcare administration involves the organization,financing and delivery of services to prevent and treat illness anddisease, including programs that serve the public and privatesectors at all levels—local, state and federal.The BSHA program emphasizes the conceptual and analytical skillsrequired to manage in contemporary healthcare organizations. Theprogram features experiential opportunities in project management,teamwork and leadership. Ideal candidates for the BSHA programare those students looking for career entry in healthcareadministration and those looking to advance from clinical/technicalroles to supervisory roles. Graduates will enhance theiropportunities for professional growth and job placement throughcarefully planned internships and a capstone experience. The BSHAprogram is an associate member institution of the Association ofUniversity Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA).Program Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:• communicate effectively with clients and members of ahealthcare organization using written, visual and oral methods;• differentiate the roles, perspectives, and expectations of clinicalpractitioners, nonclinical staff, supervisors, and managers inpromoting quality and safety within healthcare organizations;• identify the components of the health care delivery system in theunited states and the impact of social, cultural, political,economic and environmental factors affecting the managementand operation of health care organizations;• use healthcare information technology, including statisticalreasoning, to create, access, analyze, and interpret quantitativeand qualitative healthcare data and information for effectivedecision making;• describe theories affecting healthcare administration practice,including theories in business, law, organizational behavior,organizational design and strategic management;• demonstrate critical thinking to solve problems and improveperformance in healthcare organizations using principles ofaccounting, law, financial analysis, human resourcesmanagement, operations analysis, management informationsystems analysis, strategic planning, and marketing;• describe the determinants and measurement s of health anddisease in the population and the responsibilities of healthcareorganizations to individual consumers and the community;• demonstrate the ability to integrate administrative knowledgeand competencies to make good ethical choices, improveorganizational performance, and collaborate and lead others inan authentic healthcare organization; and• integrate the skills and knowledge obtained in the generaleducation with conceptual and technical competencies obtainedin healthcare management education.
School of Health and Human ServicesBackground ChecksAgencies used by the school of Health and Human Services mayrequire criminal background and/or drug screening prior toacceptance of a student into an internship or practicum. Studentswho do not pass the background check and/or drug test may beunable to attend the internship or practicum course and, therefore,may be unable to complete the program of study.
