The monthly online collaborative provides teachers with anopportunity to network, and analyze their practice and portfoliocommentaries against the certificate standards in a group setting.Sessions are held one Saturday each month from 9:00 am until Noonat various National University network sites and in a protectedonline collaborative environment. These sessions begin with a topic,but are structured to allow time for reading, editing and feedback toand from peers in a supportive environment moderated by NBCTCertified Support Providers (CSPs).Those who enroll only in NBCX 1801X may not be taking the NBCTAcademy courses, yet simply want to interact with other activecandidates from across the country, and want additional exposure tothe overall preparation methodologies.The cost effective collaborative sessions provide NBCT candidateswith a flexible, yet comprehensive approach for support,collaboration and technical assistance. This year-long collaborativeaugments other NBCT preparation methods by providing access toresources, threaded discussions and synchronous chat sessions. Theonline collaborative is hosted, but not driven, by experienced NBCTswith support provider training (NBPTS).Each year, the collaborative reconvenes with updated information inthe online supplement. As early as June, NBCT candidates will beadmitted to the collaborative and may begin accessing helpfulinformation. Qualified teachers are neededwho will teach the knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary forobtaining and retaining jobs. These teachers need anunderstanding of teaching and the pedagogical skills necessary fortraining workers in technical fields for a market requiringsensitivity to diversity, knowledge of skills and the practicalapplication of those skills in the workplace. In order to trainteachers for teaching students, choosing a technical education path,the State of California has developed professional standards forCareer Technical Education. This program has been created basedupon these standards. As a result, candidates will be prepared touse research-based pedagogical skills in the classroom by using theCareer Technical Education standards and frameworks. Thesecurriculum standards bolster California’s standards-basededucation system by incorporating cutting-edge technology aboutcareer options, technology and skills required for success in adultlife.Program RequirementsThe National University teacher preparation program for CareerTechnical Education is a four-month, five-course intensive programwith a sequence of courses that includes supervised teaching thatspans the entire program. If candidates are already teaching in atechnical/vocational classroom, the supervised teaching will takeplace in their own classroom under the guidance and support of aUniversity Supervisor and Site Mentor. Candidates who do nothave their own classroom will need to secure employment in theirsubject specialty. All candidates will complete four months ofsupervised teaching with a minimum of 20 hours per week. TheUniversity Supervisor will be responsible for guiding andevaluating the candidate. The Site Mentor will guide candidates,answer questions and provide encouragement and feedback.Program Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:• Develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary foreffective teaching.• Develop a positive environment conducive to learning.• Use knowledge of the diversity of language and culture inCalifornia to create of learning environment where all studentscan succeed.• Use learning theory as the foundation of curriculumdevelopment and instructional practice.• Use assessment to differentiate instruction to meet the needs ofall students including, but not limited to English languagelearners (ELL), special needs, gifted students, the top 1/3 or theclass, the middle 1/3 of the class and the bottom 1/3 of the class.• Demonstrate ethical behaviors in the classroom, in the schooland in the community.• Describe the legal issues that impact the teaching professionincluding FRPA requirements and mandatory reporting.• Create a list of school and community resources to meet theneeds of students who struggle with issues of chemicaldependency, abuse, violence, homelessness, and other issuesimpacting the quality of life.• Describe and demonstrate OSHA safety requirements.• Demonstrate effective application of the California TeacherPerformance Expectations.• Use the CTE California Standards and Frameworks to providecontent knowledge to students concerning their chosen careerpath.• Use information processing to create lesson plans that meet theunique needs of the individual student.• Demonstrate written and oral skills in devising and deliveringlessons.• Design lessons and units that show students are engaged indevelopmentally appropriate learningRequirement Courses(5 courses; 22.5 quarter units)CTEX 1100XCTEX 1111XCTEX 1125XOrientation to CTEAdolescent/Adult Ed Psych(Prerequisite: CTEX 1100X)Instruction/Management(Prerequisite: CTEX 1100X; CTEX 1111X)Extended Learning315
