These events are intended toencourage awareness of contemporary artistic,intellectual, cultural, gender and ethnic issues indaily life. In order to give these concerns intellectualcontext, the Center events focus specific attention onquestions of race, class, and gender, historicalrepresentation, cultural images and globalization. Inpractice, the Center serves as a bridge between the<strong>University</strong> and other communities. Events provide acommon platform for the exchange of research andideas by <strong>National</strong> <strong>University</strong> faculty and scholars atother institutions, artists and community activists.The work of the Center for Cultural and EthnicStudies is to bring cultural, intellectual and artisticevents of the highest caliber to the <strong>University</strong>.Events arranged by the Center are co-sponsoredand supported by numerous organizations, includingthe California Council for the Humanities, San DiegoPublic Library, African and African-American StudiesResearch Project at UCSD, Naval Training CenterFoundation, San Diego Historical Society, SacramentoPublic Library, Sacramento Philharmonic, St. Paul’sCathedral in Sacramento, and many others.In addition to sponsoring events and encouragingdiscussion of contemporary intellectual and culturalissues at <strong>National</strong> <strong>University</strong> campuses throughoutCalifornia, the Center for Cultural and Ethnic Studiesalso houses the Community Oral History Project. Themission of the Community Oral History Project at<strong>National</strong> <strong>University</strong> is to create a pedagogical toolthat makes history come alive for students and showthem how community history is an integral part ofU.S. and world history. Students and faculty collectand process oral history interviews with persons whohad been eyewitnesses to or participants in events ofhistorical significance for deposit in the oral historycollection at <strong>National</strong> <strong>University</strong> and the San DiegoHistorical Society. The ultimate purpose of the projectis to encourage oral history scholarship at <strong>National</strong><strong>University</strong> and in the community.Writing Across the CurriculumWriting Across the Curriculum is a <strong>University</strong>-wideprogram that enriches all schools and areas oflearning through the development of writing skillsand critical thinking. The College of Letters andSciences has developed this program to ensure thatthe writing needs of all disciplines are met and thatthe quality of writing and related skills distinguishthe <strong>National</strong> <strong>University</strong> graduate. In conjunctionwith faculty of the other schools, the faculty of Artsand Sciences serve the entire <strong>University</strong> communityby improving the skills so essential to student wellbeing. They do this by creating writing-intensivecourses, directing the Writing Centers, editing theWAC (WHACK) newsletter and the Gnu StudentJournal. denotes program also offered or partially offeredonline.
