The course ofstudy includes the theory and methods of gathering information andwriting for news beats, as well as reporting and writing, investigativeand features stories. The program introduces students to theprofessional responsibilities faced by journalists and newsorganizations with in-depth study of the ethical and legalramifications of news gathering and dissemination.Students become versed in writing for different media outletsranging from print to broadcast and Web-based formats such asmultimedia pages, blogs and podcasts. Students will actively engagein reporting and writing assignments in order to produce aprofessional portfolio that is tailored to their goals and enables themto compete for employment in the field of 21st century journalism.Graduates of the program will be prepared to embark on variedjournalism career paths at newspapers and magazines, broadcastoutlets, convergent newsrooms and new media entities.Program Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:• Work in groups to publish an online or print news product.• Write in a variety of story forms, including news and feature.• Write focused news and feature stories for a variety of platforms.• Identify the elements of style and structure in news and featurestories.• Apply copyediting rules and techniques for fact-checking.• Identify what constitutes news.• Apply ethical principles of journalism during reporting, writingand producing.• Recognize the legal boundaries of the First Amendment thatbalance the freedom and responsibility of the press.Degree RequirementsTo receive a Bachelor of Arts degree with a Major in DigitalJournalism, students must complete at least 180 quarter units asarticulated below. Forty-five (45) quarter units must be completed inresidence at <strong>National</strong> <strong>University</strong> and 76.5 must be completed at theupper-division level.
