College of Letters and SciencesMISSION STATEMENTThe College of Letters and Sciences (COLS) prepares students formeaningful careers and lifelong learning by developing an educationthat fosters the key qualities of broad-mindedness, self-assurance andcompetency in oral and written communication, the ability to bothunderstand and undertake academic research, the necessaryintellectual skill and zeal to identify and pursue one’s chosen area ofstudy, and a commitment to world-citizenship.The College of Letters and Sciences champions the philosophy of astrong liberal arts education. COLS comprises the liberal arts core of<strong>National</strong> <strong>University</strong> and is made up of a community of teachingscholars who are dynamically involved with the <strong>University</strong> at large,educating the majority of its undergraduates, cultivating andadministering the general education curriculum, sponsoringinnovative research centers and institutes, and offering numerousgraduate degree programs.HONOR SOCIETYPINNACLE HONOR SOCIETY FOR UNDERGRADUATESTUDENTSPinnacle is a national collegiate honorary society founded for thesingle purpose of recognizing the nation’s most outstanding adultand other non-traditional students. Honored students receive lettersof congratulation, certificates of membership, lapel pins, diplomaseals and honor cords. Students accepted for membership to thePinnacle Honor Society are nationally recognized for their academicachievement, community service, leadership, and ethical standards.Each commencement season, the Office of Student Affairs invitesundergraduate students to join Pinnacle based on their qualifyinggrade point average. Of the 70.5 units, students must complete at least 4.5units at the upper-division level and 4.5 units in diversity enrichedcoursework. A plus [+] indicates a diversity enriched offering. Allundergraduate students working toward the Associate of Arts orbachelor’s degree must meet the <strong>University</strong> diversity requirement.<strong>National</strong> <strong>University</strong> has general education requirements in thefollowing eight areas:AREA A: ENGLISH COMMUNICATION(Minimum 15 quarter units)AREA B: MATHEMATICAL CONCEPTS AND QUANTITATIVEREASONING(Minimum 4.5 quarter units)AREA C: INFORMATION LITERACY(Minimum 4.5 quarter units)AREA D: ARTS AND HUMANITIES(Minimum 13.5 quarter units)AREA E: SOCIAL AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES(Minimum 13.5 quarter units)AREA F: PHYSICAL AND BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES(Minimum 6 quarter units required [Note: one science lab is required.])AREA G: MODERN LANGUAGE(Minimum 9 quarter units)Letters andSciencesDegree RequirementsTo receive the AA degree, students must complete at least 90 quarterunits, 31.5 of which must be taken in residence at <strong>National</strong><strong>University</strong>. Of the 90 units required, 70.5 must fall into the areas ofgeneral education listed below. The other units can be comprised ofeither elective courses or students may chose to take a concentrationin one of the below areas.Students are urged to meet English and mathematics requirements asearly as possible in their college studies to avoid serious difficultiesin other coursework. Refer to the section on undergraduateadmission procedures for specific information regarding applicationand placement evaluation.Program Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:• Demonstrate critical thinking, reading and writing skillsappropriate to upper-division college work.• Demonstrate critical awareness of the major approaches,AREA A-G: GENERAL EDUCATION(Minimum 4.5 quarter units)Remedial courses taken to achieve minimum levels of collegiate-levelcompetency in the areas of writing and mathematical concepts andsystems do not satisfy any portion of the general educationrequirement.The following Concentrations are available for students inthe Associate of Arts degree:▲ Concentration in Business Administration (188)Faculty Advisor: Gary Zucca • (209) 475-1441 • gzucca@nu.eduThis concentration is designed for students enrolled in the Associateof Arts degree to provide a broad base of introductory businessrelateddisciplines. Students completing this degree andconcentration are prepared for entry-level positions in businessand/or articulation into a bachelor’s degree program in business.83
