To act as independent variables spaceand time must be unique , i.e., they must be absolute (as stressed byNewton). One is not permitted to view space and time as dependentvariables. Space and time cannot be considered to be functions ofvelocity, ones particular point of view, the frame of reference, or anyother such arbitrarily chosen parameter. Ones primitive independentvariables must remain exactly that: primitively independent . Velocityis a dependent variable defined as a function of the two independentvariables space and time, the distance divided by the time to travel thedistance. It is completely schizophrenic to try to invert things andto turn things around backwards by saying that space and time aredependent variables which are functions of the independent variablevelocity.
