A vulnerability assessment of the roof deck should include evaluatingthe existing deck attachment, spot checking the structuralintegrity of the deck (including the underside, if possible), andevaluating the integrity of the beams/joists. If the deck attachmentis significantly overstressed under current design windconditions or the deck integrity is compromised, the deck shouldbe replaced or strengthened as needed. The evaluation should beconducted by an investigator experienced with the type of deckused on the building. If a low-slope roof is converted to a steep-slope roof, the newsupport structure should be engineered and constructed to resistthe wind loads and avoid the kind of damage shown inFigure 3-108.Figure 3-108:The school’s woodsuperstructure installedas part of a steep-slopeconversion blew awaybecause of inadequateattachment.
