Table 3-8: Checklist for Building Vulnerability of Critical Facilities Exposed to High Winds (continued)Vulnerability Sections Guidance ObservationsStructural SystemsAre there existing roof overhangsthat cantilever more than 2 feet?Section 3.3.2 (continued)Overhangs on older buildings often haveinadequate uplift resistance.Building Envelope Section 3.3.3Exterior doors, walls, roof systems, windows, and skylights. Are soffits considered for thebuilding? Are there elevator penthouses onthe roof?Is a low-slope roof considered on asite in a hurricane-prone region? Is an EOC, healthcare facility, shelter,or other particularly important criticalfacility in a hurricane-prone region? Is the site in a tornado-prone region? Are there existing sectional or rollingdoors?Does the existing building have largewindows or curtain walls?Does the existing building haveexterior glazing (windows, glazeddoors, or skylights)?Select materials and systems, and detail to resistwind and wind-driven rain (Sections 3.3.3.1 to3.3.3.4).Design to resist wind and wind-driven waterinfiltration (Section 3.3.3.3). If there are existingsoffits, evaluate their wind and wind-driven rainresistance. If the soffit is the only element preventingwind-driven rain from being blown intoan attic space, consider strengthening the soffit.Design to prevent water infiltration at walls, roof, and mechanical penetrations (Sections3.3.3.3, 3.3.3.4, 3.3.4.1, and 3.4.4.1).A minimum 3-foot parapet is recommended onlow-slope roofs (Section 3.4.3.4).If yes, a very robust building envelope, resistantto missile impact, is recommended(Section 3.4).To minimize generation of wind-borne missiles, avoid the use of brick veneer, aggregate roofsurfacing, roof pavers, slate, and tile(Section 3.5).Older doors often lack sufficient windresistance. Either strengthen or replace. This isparticularly important for fire station apparatusbay doors. If an older building, evaluate their windresistance. If the building is in a hurricane-prone region, replace with impact-resistant glazing, or protectwith shutters.3-150 MAKING CRITICAL FACILITIES SAFE FROM High Wind
