3.6.2 Building EnvelopeThe following recommendations apply to building envelope componentsof existing critical facilities.3.6.2.1 Sectional and Rolling DoorsSectional and rolling doors (e.g., at fire station apparatus bays andhospital loading docks), installed in older buildings before attentionwas given to the wind resistance of these elements, are verysusceptible to being blown away. Although weak doors can be retrofitted,it is difficult to ensure that the door, door tracks, andconnections between the door and tracks are sufficient. It is thereforerecommended that weak doors and tracks be replaced withnew assemblies that have been tested to meet the factored designwind loads. As part of the replacement work, nailers between thetracks and building structure should either be replaced, or theirattachment should also be strengthened. If a facility has more than one sectional or rolling door, all doorsshould be replaced, rather than just replacing one of the doors. The fire station shown in Figure 3-109 had six sectional doors. One door had been replaced before a hurricane. It performedvery well, but three of the older doors were blown away and two ofthe older doors remained in place but had some wind damage.Figure 3-109:The new door in thecenter performed verywell, but the older doorson either side of it wereblown away.
