The project willbe completed at the end of 2012.Perspective View of the New Buildingof Jaffna Teaching HospitalJaffna and Kilinochchi WaterSupply & Sanitation ProjectThe Jaffna and Kilinochchi WaterSupply and Sanitation Project hasbeen proposed with the objectiveof improving water supply andsanitation infrastructure for residentsin targeted urban areas and protectionand management of water resourcesin the Jaffna Peninsula. The projectarea covers the Jaffna Peninsula andPoonerin in the Kilinochchi District. Theproject will provide new distributionsystems for the Jaffna Municipalityand Chavakachcheri Urban Councilincluding access to householdconnections and a leak detectionprogramme for rehabilitation andstrengthening of existing distributionnetworks.In addition, the project will improvea sewerage collection system inthe most densely populated area inJaffna municipal limits and constructa new sewerage treatment plantwhile providing low cost sanitationprogrammes for poor communities.There will be about 300,000beneficiaries of the water system,which is estimated to be two-thirdsof the residents in the coverage area.And the sewerage system will coverthe most densely populated areas ofJaffna Municipal Council benefiting80,000 persons.Down Stream Development ofIranamaduwa Tank Under theIranamadu Small Holder Irrigationand Livelihood DevelopmentProjectThis project is implemented inconjunction with the Jaffna WaterSupply and Sanitation Project inorder to ensure provision of adequatequantity of irrigated water for farmersliving in the down stream of IranamaduTank from which raw water is drawnfor the Jaffna and Kilinochchi WaterSupply Scheme.The project target is to cover 9000farmer families under the schemein Kilinochchi District, and theInternational Fund for AgriculturalDevelopment (IFAD) agreed to financethe project by providing USD 20million. The implementation of theproject is scheduled to commence in2011.Northern Road ConnectivityProjectThe objective of this project is torestore accessibility to essentialsocial services for rural people in theNorthern Province and to improveits nation wide connectivity whichfacilitates economic growth andcontribute to reducing disparitieswithin the provinces in Sri Lanka.The project will rehabilitate about108km of National Highways inthe Northern Province (Navatkuli-Keraitivu Road, Manipai-KaithadyRoad, Vallai-Thellipalai-Araly Roadand Mankulam-Mullaittivu Road),about 140km of provincial roads andrehabilitate or replace of selectedbridges in the Northern Province.The national link roads in theNorthern Province will receive newsurfacing and required wideningwhich will reduce travel time andcost, helping to revitalize travel fromthe North to the other parts of thecountry. The improved road accesswithin the north and connectivityto other provinces of the countrywill stimulate new economicopportunities while expandingagricultural, fishing, and commercialactivities and other related services.The Asian Development Bank hasprovided USD 154.4 million for theimplementation of the Northern RoadConnectivity Project during a five yearperiod from the year 2010-2015.Northern Road RehabilitationProgrammeNorthern road rehabilitationprogramme has been proposed to beimplemented under 13 packages. Ofthese packages, the Government ofChina through the EXIM Bank of Chinahas agreed to finance the following fivepackages which include rehabilitationand improvement of 512km of themajor national roads in the NorthernProvince. The total amount of thefunds provided by the Government ofChina is USD 423.9 million.The benefits derived from thisprogramme will be multi-fold asthe communities served by thisprogramme would benefit fromimproved, lower-cost and fastertransport services thereby improvingtheir access to economic opportunitiesand social services.Conflict Affected RegionEmergency (CARE) ProjectThe CARE Project is a multi-sectoralproject which consists of rehabilitationof roads, power, water, irrigation,vocational training and construction ofbuildings, administration and judiciary.The project is funded by the ADB witha loan of USD 150 million.• Rehabilitation of 65km of NationalRoads; (Poonarin – Paranthan Road- 25.3km & Mankulam – VellankulamRoad - 38km), 100km of provincialroads in Mannar, Vavuniya, Mullaitivuand Killinochchi districts and 70kmof municipal/urban council roads inthe Northern Province.
