Uru bokka Oya <strong>and</strong> Walawa river basins) , Flood Protection,supplementary irrigation to Hambantota District, Domestic <strong>and</strong> Industrial water toHambantotaWork is in progress. Commenced in 2004. About 3441 tanks /anicuts have alreadybeen completed.The new policies in the water sectoraim at increasing the harvest <strong>of</strong> run<strong>of</strong>fwater through the construction <strong>of</strong>new reservoirs while rehabilitatingthe existing reservoirs. Further, stepswill be taken to reduce the level water<strong>of</strong> usage by the irrigation sector.This will create pressure on theirrigation sector to develop its wateruse efficiency allowing to meet thewater requirement <strong>of</strong> other sectors tomeet the needs <strong>of</strong> the economy. As aresult, the government has decided toincrease the investment in the sectorwhich is estimated at Rs. 117 billion forthe period <strong>of</strong> 2011-2013.76
