Robematerials were also distributed among35,451 student monks in 448 approvedPirivenas located throughout theisl<strong>and</strong>. The possibility <strong>of</strong> developingeducation based industries such asuniform preparation is considered.Infrastructure Development inSecondary SchoolsGovernment has launched a specialprogramme to upgrade at least onesecondary school in each <strong>of</strong> the325 administrative divisions to afully fledged school. All necessaryinfrastructures including laboratory,ICT, multimedia, home science, sports,water supply, sanitation facilities <strong>and</strong>human resources will be provided tothe selected schools. This will minimizethe high dem<strong>and</strong> for national schoolslocated in urban areas. Constructionwork on 63 schools is on-going at acost <strong>of</strong> Rs 1,322 million.Human Resource DevelopmentA significant increase in the number<strong>of</strong> teachers in schools was witnessedfrom 2005 to <strong>2010</strong>. This has resultedin improving the student teacher rati<strong>of</strong>rom 21:1 in 2005 to 18:1 in <strong>2010</strong>. About3,238 new appointments were madeto Sri Lanka Teachers Service in <strong>2010</strong>while 410 English medium teacherswere appointed to National Schools.Another 174 graduate teachers wereappointed through competitiveexamination. Also 235 <strong>of</strong>ficers havebeen recruited to the Sri LankaTeacher Educators’ Service to improvethe governance <strong>of</strong> school network.Moreover, 200 Sri Lanka Education88
