As a result, accessto pipe borne water supply and wastewaterfacilities have been increased duringthis period. The government has given arenewed focus on water and sanitationas such services are essential to meetthe needs of a middle income countryparticularly to meet growing needs of urbanareas. Thetotal cost was Rs. 10,512 mn.Provision of pipe borne water for80,000 households, water from wellsand tube wells to 100,000 householdsand sanitation facilities to 120,000households were provided throughThird Water Supply and SanitationProject implemented in Anuradhapura,Hambantota, Kalutara, Kegalle,Monaragala and Puttalam Districts.The total cost was Rs. 8,072 mn.160,000 people benefited through theextension of the distribution system toan additional 391km to enable 32,000new connections in Akmeemana, BopePoddala, Habaraduwa and HikkaduwaPradeshiya Sabha areas. The total costwas Rs. 3,477 million.64
