As a result, accessto pipe borne water supply <strong>and</strong> wastewaterfacilities have been increased duringthis period. The government has given arenewed focus on water <strong>and</strong> sanitationas such services are essential to meetthe needs <strong>of</strong> a middle income countryparticularly to meet growing needs <strong>of</strong> urbanareas. Thetotal cost was Rs. 10,512 mn.Provision <strong>of</strong> pipe borne water for80,000 households, water from wells<strong>and</strong> tube wells to 100,000 households<strong>and</strong> sanitation facilities to 120,000households were provided throughThird Water Supply <strong>and</strong> SanitationProject implemented in Anuradhapura,Hambantota, Kalutara, Kegalle,Monaragala <strong>and</strong> Puttalam Districts.The total cost was Rs. 8,072 mn.160,000 people benefited through theextension <strong>of</strong> the distribution system toan additional 391km to enable 32,000new connections in Akmeemana, BopePoddala, Habaraduwa <strong>and</strong> HikkaduwaPradeshiya Sabha areas. The total costwas Rs. 3,477 million.64
