<strong>Ministry</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Finance</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Planning</strong> Sri Lanka > <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong> <strong>2010</strong>quality, reliable <strong>and</strong> an uninterruptedpower supply will lead to economicdevelopment <strong>of</strong> the country. Figure 1.3show the increased level <strong>of</strong> generationcapacity since 2006 as a result <strong>of</strong>increased level <strong>of</strong> investment made inthis sector.The dem<strong>and</strong> for electricity increasesat an average rate <strong>of</strong> 8 percentannually in the background <strong>of</strong> anannual economic growth <strong>of</strong> 6.4percent during 2006 - <strong>2010</strong>. As at theend <strong>of</strong> the 3rd quarter <strong>of</strong> <strong>2010</strong>, theelectricity generation has increasedsubstantially by 8.9 percent comparedto 2009 in the background <strong>of</strong> higheconomic growth <strong>of</strong> 8 percent in<strong>2010</strong>. In the context <strong>of</strong> the targetedgrowth in excess <strong>of</strong> 8 percent, thedem<strong>and</strong> for electricity is expectedto increase considerably. The totalinstalled generation capacity hasincreased from 2,684 MW in 2009 to2,806 MW in <strong>2010</strong>. The Upper KotmaleHydropower Plant <strong>and</strong> NorochcholaiCoal Power Plant will add 450 MW tothe national grid in 2011. In addition,preparative arrangements <strong>of</strong> severalnew power generation projects with atargeted capacity addition <strong>of</strong> around1,300 MW <strong>and</strong> rehabilitation <strong>of</strong> someexisting hydro power plants have beenundertaken during <strong>2010</strong>.The total energy generated at presentis 10,740 GWh per year <strong>and</strong> thisrequires to be increased up to 27,559GWh by 2025. The present installedcapacity <strong>of</strong> 2,806 MW from hydro,thermal <strong>and</strong> NCRE (Non-ConventionalRenewable Energy) power plantsrequires to increase up to 6,502 MWin order to generate the expectedenergy requirement in 2025 in terms<strong>of</strong> the long term generation plan.The ongoing <strong>and</strong> committed powergeneration projects will increase theinstalled capacity to 4,588 MW by2020. Therefore, in addition to theplanned projects, new power plantsshould be planned for a capacity <strong>of</strong>1,914 MW by 2025 to meet the powershortages.
