8A CHRONICLE OF THE ENGINEERING COUNCIL<strong>Change</strong> role, leaving an associated ‘<strong>Engine</strong>ering <strong>Council</strong> (UK)’ to continue <strong>the</strong> successfulregistration and qualification function. This new arrangement finally came into <strong>for</strong>ce inFebruary 2002.The <strong>Chronicle</strong>This <strong>Chronicle</strong> recounts <strong>the</strong> story <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Engine</strong>ering <strong>Council</strong> between November 1981 andFebruary 2002.Fig. 1 shows, with <strong>the</strong> aid <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> EC’s first logo, <strong>the</strong> four main directions in which <strong>the</strong> ECfaced - <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>ession (including <strong>the</strong> Institutions), <strong>the</strong> Government, <strong>the</strong> Education System andIndustry/Employers. If a third dimension, extending out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> page is added, this canrepresent <strong>the</strong> public and <strong>the</strong> international community.Within each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> chapters that follow we have generally followed a standard pattern. Thiswill enable readers who dip into our descriptions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> various eras <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Engine</strong>ering<strong>Council</strong> to find related events at similar points in each chapter. The pattern that we havechosen deals first with People - <strong>the</strong> main players such as <strong>the</strong> Chairman, Director-General,o<strong>the</strong>r Directors, Committee Chairmen, and Committee structures and activities. We <strong>the</strong>n,under <strong>the</strong> heading <strong>of</strong> Interfacing with <strong>the</strong> Institutions, describe events relating to <strong>the</strong>Institutions, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Engine</strong>ers’ Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Forum and o<strong>the</strong>r meetings <strong>of</strong> Institutions’ Presidentsand Secretaries or Chief Executives. Then, under <strong>the</strong> heading <strong>of</strong> Interfacing with Registrants,we follow activities <strong>of</strong> Registrants, <strong>the</strong> Register itself and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Engine</strong>ering <strong>Council</strong> RegionalOrganisations and related local groupings. After this we discuss Education and Training,dealing first, under <strong>the</strong> heading <strong>of</strong> Interfacing with Schools, with schools and schemes such asWomen Into Science and <strong>Engine</strong>ering, Neighbourhood <strong>Engine</strong>ers and Young <strong>Engine</strong>ers <strong>for</strong>Britain and <strong>the</strong>n, under <strong>the</strong> heading <strong>of</strong> Interfacing with Fur<strong>the</strong>r and Higher Education, withfur<strong>the</strong>r and higher education, including Standards and Routes to Registration (SARTOR), <strong>the</strong><strong>Engine</strong>ering <strong>Council</strong>’s Examinations and Continuing Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Development. We <strong>the</strong>n,under <strong>the</strong> heading <strong>of</strong> Interfacing Internationally, look at International matters, including <strong>the</strong>work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> European <strong>Engine</strong>ers’ Federation (FEANI) and <strong>the</strong> British National Committee <strong>for</strong>International <strong>Engine</strong>ering Affairs. Towards <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> each chapter, under <strong>the</strong> heading <strong>of</strong>Interfacing with Industry, we review relationships between <strong>the</strong> <strong>Engine</strong>ering <strong>Council</strong> andindustry, mainly through <strong>the</strong> Industry Affiliate scheme, and lastly, under <strong>the</strong> heading <strong>of</strong>Interfacing with <strong>the</strong> Public, we look at a variety <strong>of</strong> initiatives including publicity, <strong>the</strong>environment and o<strong>the</strong>r national issues under <strong>the</strong> broad umbrella <strong>of</strong> public affairs. Finally, weconclude some chapters with additional remarks on <strong>the</strong> departure and arrival <strong>of</strong> Chairmen,senior staff and o<strong>the</strong>rs who have made noteworthy contributions to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Engine</strong>ering <strong>Council</strong>.© <strong>Engine</strong>ering <strong>Council</strong> UK 2004
