210A CHRONICLE OF THE ENGINEERING COUNCILThroughout this period close links have been established, both <strong>for</strong>mally and in<strong>for</strong>mally, with<strong>the</strong> Membership Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Engine</strong>ering <strong>Council</strong> and also with <strong>the</strong> MembershipDepartments <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> IChemE and <strong>the</strong> IIE. This has in general been with <strong>the</strong> Chairman andSecretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Engine</strong>ering Committee. However, two members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Engine</strong>eringCommittee have acted as <strong>Engine</strong>ering <strong>Council</strong> Representatives with o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>Engine</strong>eringInstitutions. Additionally, <strong>of</strong> course, <strong>the</strong>re has been an <strong>Engine</strong>ering <strong>Council</strong> Representativewho has attended meetings <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Engine</strong>ering Committee, Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Review Interviewsand <strong>the</strong> audits <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Association by <strong>the</strong> Audit Panel <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Engine</strong>ering <strong>Council</strong>.Institution <strong>of</strong> Gas <strong>Engine</strong>ersAs a founder member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Engine</strong>ering <strong>Council</strong>, IGasE has been closely and activelyinvolved in <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Council</strong>’s role. The relationship has been amicable andbusinesslike which has culminated in most members who were/are eligible to register with<strong>the</strong> <strong>Council</strong> doing so.Ongoing contact with <strong>the</strong> <strong>Council</strong> at all levels ensures mutual understanding andinvolvement. IGasE embraces <strong>the</strong> EngCReps’ concept and has a positive attitude totransparency <strong>of</strong> operations in-line with <strong>the</strong> confidence <strong>of</strong> ISO 9002 accreditation.Institute <strong>of</strong> Marine <strong>Engine</strong>ersEveryone had high hopes that <strong>the</strong> <strong>Engine</strong>ering <strong>Council</strong> would be more successful than <strong>the</strong>CEI in representing <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ession and <strong>the</strong>re were some successes. The Register was properlyestablished, and <strong>the</strong> smaller Institutions had improved representation, internationalagreements were established, and all Institutions had a bigger say in how <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ession couldand did develop. However, it was not <strong>the</strong> best solution and eventually a new structure came into being in <strong>the</strong>late nineties which was more democratic. Institutions were once more responsible <strong>for</strong> much<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> work involved in assessing and registering prospective members. However, <strong>the</strong> pricepaid was higher standards.<strong>An</strong>y comment on <strong>the</strong> Institution’s relationship with <strong>the</strong> <strong>Engine</strong>ering <strong>Council</strong>Institution <strong>of</strong> Incorporated <strong>Engine</strong>ers*The IIE is supportive <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Engine</strong>ering <strong>Council</strong> and its mission as <strong>the</strong> lead body <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>engineering pr<strong>of</strong>ession, acting in partnership with <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional engineering Institutions toregulate and promote <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ession in order to maintain a world class engineering <strong>for</strong>ce in<strong>the</strong> UK.In what respects is <strong>the</strong> relationship good?IIE firmly believes in co-operating with <strong>the</strong> <strong>Engine</strong>ering <strong>Council</strong> to drive <strong>for</strong>ward <strong>the</strong>interests <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ession. There has been significant work done by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Engine</strong>ering <strong>Council</strong>to attempt to enhance <strong>the</strong> status and position <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Incorporated <strong>Engine</strong>er, and we have beenvery pleased with <strong>the</strong> attempts by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Engine</strong>ering <strong>Council</strong> to ensure that it remains focussedon its core activities.© <strong>Engine</strong>ering <strong>Council</strong> UK 2004
