10A CHRONICLE OF THE ENGINEERING COUNCILEngineers and Scientists and Westminster AbbeyThe reason that there is no “Engineers’ Corner”, as Dean Stanley explained in 1890 in his Memorials ofWestminster Abbey, is that the corners of the Abbey, founded in 1066, were quite full of monuments whenengineering emerged as a recognisable discipline. Nevertheless, many engineers, architects, scientists andtechnologists are buried or commemorated throughout the Abbey, mingling with writers, artists andecclesiastics, just as they were in life, although in many cases occupying even more prominent situations, suchas the Nave. For the record, references to the following may be discovered in Westminster Abbey:Individual Died Profession Individual Died ProfessionNW (Belfry) TowerJohn Conduitt 1737 ScientistWilliam Horneck 1746 EngineerRichard Trevithick 1833 EngineerNorth TranseptSir Clifton Wintringham 1794 PhysicianNave, North AisleLord (Howard) Florey 1968 ScientistSir William Herschel 1822 AstronomerSir John Herschel 1871 AstronomerJohn Hunter 1793 SurgeonSir Charles Lyell 1875 GeologistDr Richard Mead 1754 PhysicianDr Richard Noble 1754 PhysicianJohn Smeaton 1792 EngineerDr John Woodward 1728 GeologistNave, CentreSir Charles Barry 1860 ArchitectPaul Dirac 1984 ScientistMichael Faraday 1867 ScientistGeorge Graham 1751 ClockmakerGeorge Green 1841 MathematicianJeremiah Horrocks 1641 AstronomerDavid Livingstone 1873 ExplorerJames Maxwell 1879 ScientistSir Isaac Newton 1727 ScientistJohn L Pearson 1897 SurveyorLord (Ernest) Rutherford 1937 ScientistSir Geo Gilbert Scott 1878 ArchitectGeorge E Street 1881 ArchitectSir J J Thomson 1940 ScientistThomas Tompion 1713 ClockmakerNave, South AisleWilliam Buckland 1856 GeologistDr John Freind 1728 PhysicianNave, windowsSir John Wolfe Barry 1918 EngineerIsambard K Brunel 1859 EngineerSir Benjamin Baker 1907 EngineerLord Kelvin (Thomson) 1907 ScientistSir Charles Parsons 1931 EngineerSir Henry Royce 1933 EngineerSouth TranseptSir Herbert Baker 1946 ArchitectDr Isaac Barrow 1677 MathematicianEdward Wettenhall 1733 PhysicianSir William Chambers 1796 ArchitectStephen Hales 1761 EngineerSir John Pringle 1782 PhysicianSir Robert Moray 1673 ScientistSir Robert Taylor 1788 ArchitectJoshua Ward 1761 ScientistJames Wyatt 1813 ArchitectChoir, North AisleJohn C Adams 1892 MathematicianHugh Chamberlen 1728 PhysicianCharles Darwin 1882 ScientistSir Joseph Hooker 1911 BotanistJames Joule 1889 ScientistJoseph Lister 1912 SurgeonDr John Plenderleath 1811 PhysicianSir Stamford Raffles 1826 ZoologistSir William Ramsay 1916 ScientistGeorge Stephenson 1848 EngineerRobert Stephenson 1859 EngineerSir George Stokes 1903 MathematicianSir Alfred Wallace 1913 ScientistSt Paul’s ChapelJames Watt 1819 EngineerSt John’s ChapelSir John Franklin 1847 Artic ExplorerSt Andrew’s ChapelDr Matthew Baillie 1823 PhysicianSir Humphrey Davy 1829 ScientistJohn W Rayleigh 1919 ScientistSir James Simpson 1870 ScientistThomas Telford 1834 EngineerThomas Young 1829 ScientistWest Cloister WalkDr William Buchan 1805 PhysicianSir Richard Jebb 1787 PhysicianSouth CloisterSir Edmond Halley 1742 AstronomerRAF ChapelSir Frank Whittle 1996 EngineerThe Confessor’s Chapel[Edward the Confessor 1066 Clerk of Works]Many of the memorials were erected long after the individuals died.
