<strong>An</strong>nex EAims & Objectives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Engine</strong>ering <strong>Council</strong>, 1988AimsThe <strong>Engine</strong>ering <strong>Council</strong>’s aims are to develop and promote, <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> public good and <strong>the</strong>well-being <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> national economy, all aspects <strong>of</strong> engineering by:• Increasing awareness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> essential and beneficial part engineering plays in all aspects <strong>of</strong>modern life.• Spreading best engineering practices to improve <strong>the</strong> efficiency and competitiveness <strong>of</strong> UKbusinesses.• Stimulating and leading discussions aimed at reaching decisions on <strong>the</strong> standards <strong>of</strong>education, training, re-training and experience necessary to meet defined engineeringcompetence criteria.• Advancing engineering knowledge through education and training.• Ensuring, by direct action and encouragement, a sufficient supply <strong>of</strong> Registered Charteredand Incorporated <strong>Engine</strong>ers and <strong>Engine</strong>ering Technicians.• Co-operating with and where appropriate co-ordinating <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> any organisations,groups or individuals whose activities have an engineering dimension.ObjectivesThe <strong>Engine</strong>ering <strong>Council</strong> seeks to achieve <strong>the</strong> above aims by:• Advising, and when necessary lobbying, <strong>the</strong> Government, in conjunction with public andprivate sector representatives, on <strong>the</strong> national level policies, actions and resources essential toensure <strong>the</strong> proper supply and quality <strong>of</strong> qualified engineers and technicians.• Promoting, maintaining and expanding <strong>the</strong> Register <strong>of</strong> Chartered <strong>Engine</strong>ers, Incorporated<strong>Engine</strong>ers and <strong>Engine</strong>ering Technicians as <strong>the</strong> recognised hallmark <strong>of</strong> achieved standards.• Encouraging Chartered <strong>Engine</strong>ers, Incorporated <strong>Engine</strong>ers and <strong>Engine</strong>ering Technicians totake part in <strong>the</strong> United Kingdom’s affairs at a national level and to promote, specifically wi<strong>the</strong>mployers, <strong>the</strong> recognition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir value and contribution.• Generating strong and effective links between education and industry so that children,parents and teachers are aware <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> benefits <strong>of</strong> a career in engineering to individuals and <strong>the</strong>country.• Demonstrating <strong>the</strong> need to make best use <strong>of</strong> existing and new technology toge<strong>the</strong>r withproduct design.• Seeking to optimise <strong>the</strong> benefits <strong>of</strong> European integration through discussions with industry,learned societies, <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional Institutions and Government.• Utilising <strong>the</strong> <strong>Engine</strong>ering <strong>Council</strong>’s national network to <strong>the</strong> full in order to spread ‘The<strong>Engine</strong>ering Message’.201
